Explorer Scouts

Explorer Scouts (ages 14–18) are run at the District level, meaning they’re organised and supported by the wider Scout District rather than individual Scout Groups. This setup allows Explorers to access a broader and more diverse programme, meet peers from across the area, and take part in larger-scale events and activities.


While many Explorer Units meet at local Scout venues, they are part of a wider network that offers flexibility, variety, and exciting opportunities for personal development.

What Explorers Do

Explorers take part in a wide range of adventurous and skill-building activities, including:

  • The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) – Explorers can work towards Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels, developing skills, volunteering in the community, and completing expeditions.
  • Top Awards – Including the Chief Scout’s Platinum and Diamond Awards and the King’s Scout Award, the highest youth award in Scouting.
  • International Opportunities – Such as World Scout Jamborees, international camps, and cultural exchanges.
  • Leadership Roles – Explorers can become Young Leaders, supporting younger sections like Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts while gaining valuable leadership experience.
  • Adventure and Challenge – From hiking and kayaking to survival skills and community projects, Explorers are encouraged to push their boundaries and try new things.
